   Arizona State Standards

Academics come first at New Horizon School for the Performing Arts.

New Horizon School for the Performing Arts complies with and in many areas exceeds the state standards.

Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Music, Special Education, Physical Education and music are all taught to the state standards of Arizona.

The "after school sports program" is on Wednesdays and is free for those students interested in team athletics.

Many schools and districts are cutting back on many subjects, especially PE and music. New Horizon has a full range of academics and performing arts.

Each year the school has an election for "student leadership" officers. A president, vice president, secretary, and other officers are chosen in a student election. Each class has at least one representative. The student leadership council makes school decisions for many events and activities. Helping the poor and less fortunate with food and clothing is part of the service that the student council provides. They also visit the city council offices of Mesa to learn about the management and leadership that goes into a civic enterprise. The student council also travels to a few of the retirement homes in Mesa to sing songs of the holidays and give presents and good cheer to all in the community.

The performing group "The Kids Next Door" are very active in the community as well. They perform on an extremely high level. Many of the retirement parks have this group year after year and say that these young people are "the best entertainment they have at the park". They also take a tour each spring and perform at Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland. The KND also participate in a special training workshop each year to get the Disneyland professionals helping in the education of performing effectively. They have been told that these elementary students have been some of the best participants in the program compared them with junior high and high school programs.

To perform in these events the students must keep their grades to a high level . Academics are first. If a student is not keeping up with their Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Writing, and other assignments they cannot perform in the special programs on campus. The push for academic excellence is an important part of the quest for performing excellence.
